Meet Crystal. As a single mother of nine who married young and lacked a high school diploma, Crystal thought she was fortunate to have a full time job managing a catering company. At her cousins’ urging, she attended the PHP Successful Employment Program. PHP training caused Crystal to question where she was in life and where she was going. She soon realized that she could do better; that she could do anything she set her mind to. Crystal learned of a job opportunity driving big trucks at Kennecott Utah Copper. It was a completely different environment that offered better pay, hours and benefits. Although she had no experience driving trucks, PHP training helped Crystal pinpoint her applicable skills and produce a professional resume that fit the job. Crystal applied to Kennecott directly and through the Department of Workforce Services. When she received rejection letters, Crystal didn’t give up. She attended a Kennecott presentation at PHP and was able to speak directly with their representative. Her persistence paid off. Crystal was offered the job! Crystal is living proof that employers look for more than specific skills; they highly value qualities such as dependability, determination and drive. |
